Agafay at a glance

Agafay is a stone desert of low hills, dry ground and wide views, not a sea of sand. The regional tourism board puts it at roughly 40 km from Marrakech. The distance depends on which camp you go to, and no one can promise a fixed driving time, because traffic and the last stretch of track vary.

That makes Agafay the easiest desert trip from the city. You can go for a few hours, add a camel ride and come back the same evening, or sleep in a camp. If you want large orange dunes, you need a longer trip, covered on our Sahara desert tour page.

Camps in the Agafay Desert

The regional tourism board lists several camps under accommodation, among them Inara, Scarabeo and Agafay Luxury Camp. A listing shows that a camp exists. It does not confirm that it has rooms on your dates or that every activity it sells has been inspected, so read each offer carefully.

  • Check the exact camp name. One operator runs two sites with different locations, The Stone Camp and Les Roches Noires. If you compare two quotes, make sure they are for the same place.
  • Compare what is included. Transfer from Marrakech, dinner, breakfast, tent type and activities are priced differently from camp to camp. We cannot give a price range that fits all of them.
  • Ask about the return. Agree the pick-up time and drop-off point in the city before you book, especially if your riad is deep in the medina.

Camel rides near Marrakech

A camel ride is the most common activity in Agafay. One camp lists a ride at 300 MAD per camel in 2026, lasting 30 to 40 minutes, with the rate set for one adult and one child on the animal. That is one camp's tariff, not a market price, so use it only as a reference point.

Before you book, ask where the ride goes and how many rides the animals do in a day. If the animals look thin, hurt or overworked, you can say no. A fair operator will not push you.

Do not feed or touch stray animals near camps and villages. British travel advice points to a risk of rabies in Morocco, so seek medical advice after any bite or scratch.

Quad bikes, safety and what to bring

Other activities are sold alongside camel rides, and the safety standard differs from provider to provider.

Quad biking

British travel advice asks you to check a provider's safety standards and insurance and to wear a helmet. Ask whether your travel insurance covers the activity before you ride.

Sun and ground

There is little shade on the plateau. Bring a hat, sun cream, water and closed shoes for the stony ground. The weather figures in our Marrakech weather guide are for the city and do not describe the desert.

Evenings

Camps are away from city lights. If you stay overnight, bring a warm layer and a torch, and check the temperatures for your month.

How to get to Agafay

Most visitors book a tour or a transfer with pick-up in Marrakech. Ask the provider for the exact camp, the pick-up time and the total time on the road, because a distance of about 40 km does not tell you how long the last stretch takes. Check with your riad whether a pick-up from the medina gate or from the door is possible. Our guide to where to stay in Marrakech explains why some houses cannot be reached by car.
