Cooking Classes and Food Tours

A cooking class puts you at a work station for a few hours, and a food tour takes you through the city on foot. This guide explains the difference, the formats and what to check before you book.

Cooking class or food tour

A cooking class is hands-on. You prepare dishes, usually a starter and a main course, and then eat them. A food tour is a guided walk with tastings and no cooking. Many travellers do one of each: the class on a quiet morning, the tour on the first evening, when the medina is a good place to get your bearings.

Prices differ a lot between providers, and published lists are often "from" prices. This page gives published examples and the questions that decide whether an offer suits you. It is an independent guide and not run by any hotel, school or tour company.

What the main options include

Read the details before you book.

La Maison Arabe workshops

The school runs workshops at the hotel or at its country club. The longer workshop lasts about three hours. You prepare a starter and a main course, watch a dessert demonstration and sit down to eat afterwards. Each guest has an individual work station with a screen. The express class takes one hour.

Open to non-guests

You do not need to stay at the hotel to take part. The classes are led by traditional cooks known as dadas. A market tour is not automatically part of the workshop, so do not assume one.

Marrakech Food Tours

This provider advertises food tours from USD 69, cooking classes from USD 54 and market visits from USD 35. These are starting prices. Do not mix it up with companies that have similar names, and check the final price for your date and group size.

What to ask before you book

The answers are often the difference between two similar offers.

Is a market visit included?

Some classes start with shopping and some do not. Ask where the ingredients come from and how long the market part lasts.

Is a transfer included?

If the venue is in the medina, a car cannot always reach the door. Ask for the exact meeting point and the way to walk there.

The medina โ†’

What about allergies and diets?

Tell the provider about allergies and any vegetarian or vegan wishes when you book, and ask them to confirm in writing. Do not assume every kitchen can adapt a dish.

What are the group size and the language?

Small groups give you more time at the stove. Confirm the language of the teacher, and whether children are welcome.

What is the price per person and the cancellation rule?

Check for booking surcharges, the currency of the price and what happens if the date has to change.

Fitting a class into your trip

Time and place.

Pair it with a quiet morning

A three-hour class fits into one morning. Keep the afternoon free in summer, when city highs average 37.7 ยฐC in July.

Stay close to the medina

If your class is in the medina, a base inside or near the old city saves a taxi ride.

Where to stay โ†’

Combine it with sights

Plan the class on a day without a timed ticket, such as Jardin Majorelle, so you are not racing the clock.
