Sahara Desert Tours from Marrakech

The Sahara is a long way from Marrakech. Merzouga takes 9 to 10 hours each way, Zagora 6 to 7, so the real choice is between a two-day and a three-day trip. Here is how the routes compare and what to know before you book.

A Sahara tour from Marrakech: the honest version

The big dunes of the Sahara are far from Marrakech. One tour operator gives about 560 km and 9 to 10 hours of driving to Merzouga, the village next to the Erg Chebbi dunes. It gives about 360 km and 6 to 7 hours to Zagora. These are planning values, not timetables, and stops, sightseeing and weather add to them.

That is why Merzouga is not a sensible day trip. You would spend most of the day in the vehicle. The shortest tour that operator offers to Merzouga is 3 days and 2 nights, and to Zagora it is 2 days and 1 night. If you only have one day, our Agafay Desert page covers a stone desert about 40 km from the city.

Merzouga or Zagora?

Both trips cross the High Atlas and use a similar kind of vehicle and camp. The landscape and the time you need are different.

The prices are "from" prices for group trips as advertised in October 2026, without a travel date. Transfers, meals, a single room and entrance fees can be extra, so compare what each offer includes. A tour to Zagora does not promise the large dunes of Erg Chebbi.

The road over the Tizi n'Tichka pass

The road: Tizi n'Tichka and the long first day

The tour route of one operator to Merzouga crosses the Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass, which that operator gives as 2,260 m, and stops at Aït Benhaddou. Do not confuse this pass with Tizi n'Test, which is on the road towards Taroudant.

The first day is mostly driving, with stops. Expect to arrive at the camp late in the afternoon or evening, and plan your sleep, snacks and motion sickness tablets accordingly. Ask your provider how the driving is split between the days and how many hours you are in the vehicle each day.

The pass can be affected by weather. Ask the operator about the current state of the road before you go.

Aït Benhaddou on the way to the desert

Aït Benhaddou is a fortified settlement of earthen buildings in Ouarzazate province. UNESCO added the Ksar of Aït Benhaddou to the World Heritage List in 1987. It is the usual stop on the way to Merzouga and Zagora.

Ask your tour provider how much time you get there and whether a local guide for the ksar is included. UNESCO status does not set a ticket price or guarantee opening hours, so confirm both when you book.

Safety and how to choose a provider

The German Foreign Office advises that off-road tours in the Zagora and Merzouga area should go in a group with registered local guides, and that night driving should be avoided.

Group and guide

Ask whether your guide is registered. Prefer a group over a driver who goes off the road alone, and say no to off-road night driving.

What is included

Check the transfer, camp type, dinner, breakfast, camel ride and return time. A low "from" price may leave out items you expect.

Insurance and cash

Check that your travel insurance covers desert activities. Bring small notes for tips and drinks, because camps are far from cash machines.

When to go and how to plan

Marrakech has its hottest months in July and August, when the mean daily maximum is about 37 to 38 °C. Our weather guide has the month-by-month figures for the city. They are city figures and do not describe the desert, so ask your provider about conditions at the camp for your dates.

Plan your arrival and flight home with the long driving days in mind. If your flight leaves early on the last morning, do not book the last day of a three-day tour. Details on getting to and from the city are on our Marrakech airport page, and a comparison of other trips is in Marrakech excursions.
