The Atlas Mountains near Marrakech
On a clear day you can see the snow-capped High Atlas from Marrakech. Two valleys are the usual choices for a day out. Imlil, in the Toubkal area, suits walking and village scenery. The Ourika Valley, covered on its own page, is the other classic trip, with a road along the river to Setti Fatma.
For Imlil, a hotel operator in the village describes the route as the R203 to Asni, then a turn-off and another 17 km to Imlil. The road is paved and a regular car can do it. The operator gives about 75 minutes from Marrakech, which is a planning value, not live traffic information.

Getting to Imlil: car, transfer or tour
Imlil is a village road-head. Most of what you do there starts on foot.
Hire car
You can drive yourself on asphalt. A central car park in Imlil takes a small fee, and no fixed amount is published. Start early so that you do not drive the mountain road in the dark.
Private transfer
The hotel operator quotes 85 โฌ per single trip for its own transfer. That is one offer, not a taxi tariff, so compare it with other quotes and agree the return time.
Organised day trip
A guided trip takes care of the driving and often includes a walk with a local guide. Check the departure point, the group size and the time you spend in the mountains, not just on the road.

Toubkal and the guide rule
Toubkal is the best-known walk from Imlil. A current tour operator describes licensed mountain guides as compulsory and says guides and passes are checked on the route. It names 2018 as the start of the rule. Sources differ on when the requirement began, and we cannot point to a single legal text, so treat this as the operator's account.
The practical advice is the same everywhere. British travel advice recommends professional help for Atlas walks, suitable equipment and insurance. The German Foreign Office recommends registered local guides and groups for trekking. For a long walk to Toubkal, book a licensed guide, and ask your host or operator which rules apply to the route you plan.
For a short village walk, ask in Imlil what the current local practice is. Do not assume that a guide is or is not needed for every path.
Mountain safety in the High Atlas
Mountain weather changes faster than city weather, and the figures in our Marrakech weather guide are for the city only. British travel advice warns of flash floods, particularly in the mountains and along rivers, and recommends checking your insurance for the activity.
- Equipment: sturdy shoes, layers, a rain jacket, sun protection and plenty of water. Do not rely on your phone signal for navigation.
- Time: leave Marrakech early, plan to turn back in time and agree a return time with your driver.
- Flash floods: avoid dry riverbeds and narrow gorges after rain, even when the sky above you is clear.
The 2023 earthquake and the villages
The earthquake of 8 September 2023 had a magnitude of 6.8, according to the report of the Moroccan authorities, and damaged city walls, palaces, mosques and houses in the Marrakech medina. In the province of Al Haouz, rebuilding continues, and the government reported in September 2025 that about 24,000 homes had been rebuilt.
That figure covers the whole province. It does not describe any single village. A local hotel operator in Imlil still publishes directions and stay offers, but that does not tell you how far the village has been repaired, and the state of individual paths and buildings can differ. Ask your host or guide about the current situation, and be respectful when you take photographs of homes and people.
Combining the Atlas with other plans
The Atlas fits well into a day away from the heat or the crowds of the medina. If you want something longer, the road across the Tizi n'Tichka pass leads to Aรฏt Benhaddou and the desert, see our Sahara desert tour page. For a quieter first day in Marrakech before a trek, see where to stay. An overview of all options is in Marrakech excursions.
